Life Story for Graham McKenzie

Graham McKenzie, who was in his seventies, was a respected veteran journalist in Northern Ireland.

Mr. McKenzie had enjoyed a long career in newspapers and broadcasting.

In true journalist fashion he had started out as a “corr” for his local newspaper — reporting on events in his home town of Ballygowan for the Newtownards Chronicle

From the first his well written copy impressed the editor who assumed his correspondent was a man with years of experience behind him. The editor had a shock when Mr. McKenzie dropped off his copy at the office one day while wearing his school uniform.

The young journalist went on to to work for the Belfast Telegraph, the Daily Express and the Daily Mail.

Friends and former colleagues speak of a journalist of the “Old School” who had an acute eye for detail and who set high standards.

He left newspapers to work for the BBC where he became Editor of radio news in Northern Ireland.

Following a distinguished career in broadcasting, Mr. McKenzie worked in public relations for a time.

In retirement he set up The Copyboys website which is an online forum for retired journalists.

His Funeral took place in Bangor on Friday (March 23).
