Life Story for Werner Heubeck

Werner Wolfgang Heubeck will be remembered warmly by many people in Northern Ireland as the man who risked his life on many occasions during the troubles to keep the buses running.

As managing director of Ulsterbus and Citybus, Mr. Heubeck ignored the risks and carried bombs off his company’s vehicles on a number of occasions. He always maintained that he acted after making an astute judgement and never acted foolishly. His actions won him the respect of the community but caused consternation among the security forces.

Heubeck was a larger-than-life character and was described by former colleagues as being ‘inspirational’.

He was at the helm of the bus company for 20 years. He was awarded an OBE in 1977 and made a CBE in 1988 at the time of his retirement.

Mr. Heubeck had been a prisoner of war, having served in the Africka Korps during the second world war.

He was a keen woodworker and received, among his many retirement gifts, a large quantity of hard woods. In latter years he had lived with his wife in the Shetlands. He wife, Monica, died last month.
