Life Story for Cardinal Cahal Daly

The former Primate of All Ireland, Cardinal Cahal Daly, has died. He was 92.

The Cardinal had been rushed to Belfast City Hospital four days ago suffering from heart problems.

A spokesman for the Catholic Church said Dr. Daly had died peacefully among friends and family.

Many tributes have been paid to the Cardinal. The current Primate, Cardinal Sean Brady, who had visited Dr. Daly in hospital, said the death meant Ireland had lost “one of its brightest lights and most able sons”.

Cardinal Brady said Dr. Daly was “firm and courageous in his absolute rejection of violence as a means of achieving political ends”.

Dr. Daly was born in Loughguile, County Antrim on 1 October, 1917.  He was made a Cardinal in 1991, and retired in 1996 at the age of 79 when he returned to his study of philosophy.

The Cardinal’s remains will arrive at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast, on Saturday (January 2) at noon for Mass for the Dead.

The remains will lie in state until 9 p.m. on Saturday and again from 9 a.m. on Sunday. 

Liturgy of the Word and the removal of the remains to Armagh will take place at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral cortege will arrive at Lower English Street in Armagh at 5 p.m. Mass will take place at 5.30 p.m. in St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The remains will then lie in state until 10 o’clock on Sunday evening and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday (January 4), with the Office for the Dead taking place at 6 p.m.
